The chart illustrates the changes of proportion of population aged 65 and over in three nations: Japan, Sweden, the USA during the 100 years period.
In sum, there is an upward trend of the elderly people in all 3 countries. And Japan has been predicted to have the most significant shift over the one century period.
In particular, at the beginning in 1940, the USA had the most elderly citizens at around 9%, following the second was Sweden, Japan had the least old people at only 5%. In the next 50 years, there was a gradual increase of old dwellers in the USA and Sweden from those started points to just under 15% in 1990. Meanwhile, Japan remained steady at under 5% until the early years of 2000s.
As can be seen from the chart, Japanese who have been 65 years-old and over soared suddenly from 10% in 2030 to almost 2.7 times in 2040. While, during this 10 years period, Sweden and the USA have the sharp growth to 25% and around 23% respectively.
