Question : Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading and the lecture are both about the story of the Burning mirror. The author feels that the burning mirror is just a story. The lecturer challenges the claim made by the author. He is of the opinion that the author's thoughts are unconvincing.
To begin with, the author argues that ancient Greeks were not technologically advanced to make that big mirror. The article mentions that the technology of producing a large sheet of copper with specific requirements did not exist then. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He feels that they did not need large copper to make the mirror. Additionally, he said that they needed only small pieces of copper.
Secondly, the writer suggests that it should take a long time to set the fire of the ships. In the article, it is mentioned that it required 10 minutes to collect the rays on a wooden target on 30 meters distance while the object is moving. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that the ships were made with wood and different subjects that made it quicker to fire the ships in a few seconds even if the ship was moving
Finally, the author posits that it was not an improvement in a weapon that the Greeks already had like a flaming arrow. Moreover. in the article, it is stated that the mirror and flaming arrows had the same use and effective to burn the ships. In contrast, the lecturer's positions are that the enemy would not see a fire, just a mirror. As a result, it would be more surprising to the enemies which
he notes that
