The Salton Sea in California is actually a salty inland lake. The level of salt in the lake's water-what scientists call its salinity-has been increasing steadily for years because the lake's water is evaporating faster than it is being replaced by rainfall or rivers. If the trend continues, the lake's water will soon become so salty that the lake will be unable to support fish and bird populations. The lake would then become essentially a dead zone. Fortunately, there are several ways to reverse the trend that is threatening the lake's health.
The reading discusses the Salton Sea in California are becoming salty so it threatened the life if bird and fish populations. Hence, the author listed three factors to reverse the trend that threatens wildlife. However, the professor finds all the ideas unrealistic and impractical and presents some evidence to refute them.
First, the author points out that they can remove the salt by desalination facilities. In contrast, the professor asserts that it associated with some problems. For example, solid materials remained and they contain some chemicals like selenium that is poisonous. As a result, when humans breath it makes serious health problems for them.
In addition, the author proposes that they can dilute the salt level by entering ocean water to it. On the contrary, the speaker casts doubt on this issue and standing that it requires pipeline and canals for transporting the water of the ocean. but the country does not have this source and the ocean is 1000 kilometer away from the Salton Sea, so it is a very expensive project.
Last but not least, the reading passage mentioned that constructing the wall to divide the Lake to some sections could be a solution. On the other hand, in direct contradiction to the reading, the lecturer claims that it is unlikely to work because the frequent events and the geographical feature of it. It turns out, it is convincing for short while though earthquake destroys the wall and water goes to another section. In conclusion, according to the listening material this argument that we can reverse the process is unwarranted.
