Dear Cordelia,
This is my first letter to you in the year, and in particular, after our last meeting at Bryan's wedding about a year ago. Since then, I have been looking forward to discussing with you concerning my career challenges without success until last week when Bryan forwarded your address to me.
I have been having some challenges at work. The pressure has reached a boiling point that if nothing is done, I might find it difficult to cope for another year. First, as you know my stand while I was in Nigerian as a Christian, that I do not like missing attending Sunday services in Church. My current job does not give me the opportunity to attend church at all because of religious victimization. Second, the economy here is quite different from what we have at home. Here, it is a "pay as you go" economy where if you do not work daily, you find it difficult to cope with the bills ranging from heating, energy, rentals and commuting. I have to be putting in extra hours in order to survive and have some savings. Third, apart from the fact that I do not have a free time on sunday, it is also bad that the working hours have to extended to about 10 hours in a stretch such that I am always stressed out by the close of business. This is already telling on my health. Fourth, as a worker in a cement factory, the long term health hazards associated with the work environment cannot justify a longer stay at work than I have already done because of the consequences of long term exposure to cement dust.
For a change Cord, I will appreciate a white collar job instead of this blue collar job I currently do in a strange land. Something that will move me into an office where I can practice what I studied and earned degrees for. I am looking at managerial jobs in the construction and manufacturing sectors where I had previous experience.
I am aware you have been in Europe for about a decade now and you have settled down. I am basically writing to seek for your opinion and ask you to refer me to some of the relevant organizations within your professional network for such jobs. You are well aware of my performance when we were in school together. I have also gone ahead to acquire more qualifications in project management and a Masters in business administration to prepare me for a time like this.
I assure you that I will not disappoint you in any organization where I find favour based on your referral.
Kindly extend my courtesy to your family. I look forward to seeing you during the coming summer holidays.
Thanks a million.
Your sincerely,
Bamidele.
