The lecturer refutes the arguments of the reading passage about the salvage logging. The reading passage suggests three reasons to explain why salvage logging has a good impact on both damaged forests and the economy. However, the lecturer disagrees with each of those reasons.
First, the reading passage suggests that salvage logging can help forest areas recover from the disaster by eliminating the remains of dead trees and create space for new trees to grow. However, the lecturer states that removing trees did not always have a positive impact on the condition of tree growth. The decomposing process provides soil with nutrients, which make a better condition for trees’ future growth. Therefore, cleaning up dead trees may reduce the nutrients in the soil and thus prevents the rapid growth of trees.
Second, the reading passage mentions that salvage logging can reduce the damages of insect infection because the rotting wood is a habitat for harmful insects. However, the lecturer claims that insects are not always harmful. For example, a specific beatle in Alaska cause no damage to forests. In addition, rotting woods are used by birds and other insects which contributes to the forest. Therefore, salvage logging may give a harmful influence on the forest regrowth in the long run.
Third, the reading passage claims that salvage logging is beneficial for economic growth. The industry can make use of trees that have been damaged by disasters and salvage logging provides more additional jobs for local people. However, the lecturer points out that the economic impact of salvage logging is small and does not last for the long term. In some tough situation, it is necessary to use a Helicopter or other vehicles, which is very costly to maintain. Moreover, the jobs from salvage logging are very temporary and experienced people who are not local residents tend to take that job.
