Some controversy has been generated about what were the uses of the carved sotne balls that were found in Scotland. That dated back to Neolithic period about 4000 years ago. The reading states that there are three possible theories about the uses of the carved stone balls. However, the professor argues that none of these points about the purpose of stone balls are convincing.

The first point of dispute is if the stone balls were used as weapons. The lecturer arguse that if these balls were used for fighting and hunting, they should show signs of wearing. However, they actually did not have any cracks or broken parts. Therefore the speaker does not convinced that the sotnes were used as tool to hunt or fight. By contrast, the author believes that stone balls were used as weapons because they had holes and grooves.

The second controversial issue is about if measuring is one of the uses of the carved stone balls. According to the professor, these balls have different sizes because they were made out of various types of stones. Some of them were very heavy and the others were light as a hand full of feathers and hand full of stones they do not weight the same. Thus, the balls could not have been used as stander to wheigh grians and food. In spite that interestingly, the writer believes that weighing and measuring was what stone balls were used for.

The final point of debate is the question of if the carved stone balls were used to show one's social status. The speaker asserts that stone balls could not have served a social purpose because if that true, many of the people who die at time should be buried with what they owned. On the other hand, non of the graves of people who buired had the stone that they possess. In addition, some of stone balls had intricate drawing on it and other had simple line. Despite that possible rational, the author ignores these potential explanations.
