The chart below gives information about the age of women in Australia when they gave birth to their first child in 1966, 1986 and 2006.
The bar chart compares the percentage of women having their first baby at different ages in three years: 1966, 1986 and 2006.
Overall, it is clear that while the number of women giving birth for the first time when they were under 19 and between 19 and 24 witnessed a significant drop while the opposite was true for the remaining groups. It is also evident that there was a dramatic fluctuation in the proportion of women who were in their late 20s and over 40.
As can be seen from the chart, in 1966, the age between 19 and 24 was the most common one to give birth to the first baby, accounting for over 60%, which was nearly two times and six times respectively as much as the figures for those who were from 25 to 30 and from 30 to 34. Moreover, while the number for the former decreased enormously before hitting the lowest point of about 28%, that for first-time mothers who were in their early 30s experienced a substantial upward trend to the peak of approximately 45%. Meanwhile, the figure for those having their first child in their late 20s peaked at 50% in 1986, which was followed by a slight decline of more than 10% 20 years later.
Looking at the chart in more detail, while there was a considerable drop to over 10% in 2006 in the quantity of women at the youngest group, the inverse was true for those who were between 34 and 40, which climbed gradually before hitting the highest point of 30% at the end of the time surveyed. In the meantime, starting at only 3% in 1966, the figure for the oldest women declined moderately to 2% but then saw a growth of about 5% in 2002.
