Essay topics:

Asteroids are large space objects made of rock and ice. There are hundreds of thousands of asteroids in our solar system. Though we often hear ideas about establishing colonies of humans to live and work on our Moon or our neighboring planet, Mars, some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.

The listening content totally contradicts the article on the topic whether asteroids are good colonization options for humans. First, the author says that because of the low gravity in asteroids, it is easy for humans landing, taking off, and carrying equipment. However, the speaker points out that despite these benefits, there are more risks. To be specific, in the environment of low gravity, human beings lose muscle and bone density. It is harmful to health.

Second, the author mentions that people can mine the rare and profitable minerals in asteroids. Likewise, the speaker maintains that this is not the whole picture. In fact, people may not benefit from these minerals. For one thing, the cost of transporting may be very expensive, then the total cost would excess the revenue. For another, there is no guarantee that the price will remain high. When the supply increases, the price will decrease. This way, mining this valuable metals will not be profitable any more.

Lastly, the author suggests that some asteroids are easier to reach than the moon and Mars. Nevertheless, the speaker refutes it and argues that even though a number of asteroids are easy to reach, it will be difficult to return in that the orbits are unusual. These asteroids which are near Earth may move away to the distance that is farther than Mars. Thus, people who go there may find trouble coming back to Earth.
