Best way to teach is to praise positive actions and neglect negative actions

This statement gives a limited idea of what teaching should be. It’s extremely important to praise children when they do something positive. This way we are encouraging them to keep doing the positive things and are in a way shaping their character. If a child is constantly praised for his good behavior or kindness, he creates a positive mental image of himself and is willing to do everything it takes to live up to that image. When a teacher gives stars to a student who completes his homework on time and praises him in front of his peers, he feels this positive pressure to continue doing the good work.

However, praising children for their good deed doesn’t mean that we should neglect the negative things that they do. If we neglect the negative things that children do, we are sending them a wrong signal that it’s okay to do bad things and even better if you are able to get away with it. For example, if a small child coming from an underprivileged background is not chided when he steals or shoplifts, he might end up thinking that it’s okay to do these things especially because life has already been unfair to him. When this child is nabbed by the police, he would never understand why he is being punished because no one had tried to edify his acts and help him differentiate between right and wrong.

Although it’s important to praise children for their good deeds, we as adults must be careful that we aren’t comparing one child with another. Every child is special and has his own set of skills and extoling the child whose performance is outstanding should not dissuade other children and they shouldn’t feel that they are less. Although praise is good and can do wonders for a child’s confidence, it should be well deserved. Sometimes praising a child over and over again might cause them slip into overconfidence and overestimating themselves which could result in failure.

I firmly believe that best teaching is not limited to praise and censure alone. Good teaching involves understanding your students and their needs and devising effective ways to ensure they are learning and enjoying at the same time. Instead of just reading it off the textbooks, teachers should use innovative ways of teaching like showing subject related videos, conducting lab sessions and taking students on field visits. Hence in helping students learn, a teacher needs to think and apply whatever methods that methods that have a positive impact on their learning. Hence, good teaching is not restricted to the reactions of teachers to the actions of their students and actually goes way beyond it.
