Eating sweet foods produces acid in the mouth, which can cause tooth decay. (High acid levels are measured by low pH values)
Describe the information below and discuss the implications for dental health.
The line graph illustrates the acid level changing with time fading away after eating sugars or honey.
It can be seen that the lower the ph values than 5.5, the more likely dental caries will occur. After consuming sweet foods, the acidity will reach the strongest point at a certain period time, which is approximately 5 minutes. Since then, the longer the sugars stay in mouth, the acidity damped down, the ph level appear more alkaline. In other words, the speed of acid-stage passing increases with the lapse of time, and the speed of the acid passing order is honey, fruit sugar, cane sugar, from fast to low respectively.
The graph implies that after having candies, we should brush our teeth immediately therefore the tooth decay will be prevented. And we should help children form a good habit of brushing their teeth right after had sweets in order to maintain good oral health.
