Ways to stop the spread of the cane toad in Australia.
Both the passage and the lecture discusses about the cane toads in Australia.
While the passage says that the can destroy toads the lecture disagrees.
First, the passage claims that to prevent the spread of toad would be to build a national fence. A fence that blocks the advance of toads will prevent them from moving into those parts of Australia that they have not yet colonized.
However, the lecture insist that this approach won't be easy to work out and is unwanted. It will be unsuccessful as the new toads and toad eggs flow through the rivers and streams. And even if two or three toads or eggs comes through the fence from a river or stream, they will reproduce and increase their population anyway.
Next, the passage asserts that the toads could be captured and destroyed by volunteers. The cane toads can easily be caught in simple traps and can even be captured by hand. Also young toads and eggs are even easier to gather and destroy.
In contrast, the lecture argues that it might not help. It could be successful but the untrained volunteers will not understand and to it well. As there is a frog species which is in danger and the volunteers might hurt them.
Finally, the passage states that the researchers are developing a disease-causing virus to control the cane toad populations.
On the other hand, the lecture points out that its a bad idea to use virus because we won't know the consequences of it. As it might affect the native cane toads in Central and South America as the animals are transferred for research or if they migrate then they might affect the whole ecosystem which doen't sound good.
