The chart shows the rate of people living in Australia who were born in distinct countries from 1976 to 2011.
Overall, it is clear that the percentage of Asians and people from other countries going to Australia tended to rise over the period, while there was an opposite trend which could be seen in people from the UK. Besides, the total population saw a slight drop in the first 25 years but later rose significantly during the final 10 years.
In 1976, around 14% of the Australian people were born in the UK, followed by other and Asia, at about 11% and 3% respectively. Over the next 25 years, while there was a dramatic decrease by approximately 7% in Australians who came from the UK, the figures for Other and Asia increased sharply to 12% and 8% in turn. The total demographic of Australia witnessed a gradual decrease from about 22% in 1976 to its all-time low of 21% in 2001.
Over the last 10 years, the percentage of people who came from the UK continued to fall to 5%, the lowest proportion among Asia and Other. By contrast, the figure for Asians went up dramatically and surpassed Other to become the nation having the most people living in Australia, at 15% in 2011. The total population of Australia saw a steep growth and reaching a peak at 25%.
