Two tunnels (diagrams) The diagrams show the cross-sections of two tunnels, one joining France and Italy and the other joining two Japanese islands.
The two figures illustrate the differences between the two tunnels. Figure 1 indicates how the cross-section of the Mont-Blanc Road Tunnel between France and Italy was constructed from 1957 and 1965 while Figure 2 shows a Railway Tunnel named Seikan in Japan which is built during a 42-year period (1946-1988).
It is clear that the Railway Tunnel needed more time to complete than the Road Tunnel. Noticeably, Japan’s tunnel is longer than Road Tunnel.
Looking at the first figure, the Mon-Blanc was constructed to connect French and Italy whereas the Railway Tunnel was located in the domestic area of Japan, which helped the Japanese to transport from Aomori City to Hakodate city. Whereas the length of the Road Tunnel was 11.60 km, the length of the Railway Tunnel was approximately five times longer, at 53.85 km.
Moving to the remaining parts, the Railway Tunnel of Japan took 42 years to construct, which was slower than the Road Tunnel, at only 8 years. Meanwhile, the height of the Seikan Tunnel compared to Tsugaru Strait was around 240m. By contrast, the gap between the cross-section of Mont-Blanc and land was 3.5 km.
