The reading and the lecture are both about preventing the salinity of the Salton Sea. The author of the reading presents three solutions to decrease the saltiness in the lake water. The lecturer disputes the claims made in the article. Her position is that these three reasons are relatively unrealistic and not practical.
According to the reading, salt can be removed by processing the lake water through desalination facilities. The article mentions that the facilities will pump the water in, evaporate it into steam, leave solid salty materials, and return cooled down water. The lecturer challenges this specific argument.
She claims that this way elevates a serious health risk to human bodies. Additionally, he points out that extracted solid materials are mostly salt, however, also contain toxic chemicals such as selenium, which can be taken into the air by wind and become a danger to humans' breath.
Secondly, the author suggests building pipes and canals to degrade salinity in the lake. The article says that the water from the Pacific Ocean has 20% less salt concentration than the lake. The lecturer, however, asserts that the government is hard to get such abundant resources to complete this construction.
She goes on to say that the Salton Sea is 100 kilometres away from the Pacific Ocean, and building pipelines or canals can be costly.
Finally, the author posits that saltiness can be controlled by building walls to separate the lake. The author contends that while the salinity in small sections upgrades, the main part is controlled by delivering fresh water from small rivers. In contrast, the lecturer’s stance is that this idea is only available for a short time but do not last for long. He notes that the walls are likely to collapse under the frequent and intense geographical activities in the lake region, for example, the earthquake. Hence, the water in small sections will flow back into the large section and mix up with the low salinity water again.
