Standpoints diverge on whether humanitarian sacrifices in the animal research process can justify human’s indifference and brutality. Although benefits from animal testing should be taken into consideration, I vigorously oppose now that animal abuse for testing is ethically unacceptable.
Admittedly, there are myriad reasons why people support using the animal in medical research and other product testing. Perceptibly, animal experiments have contributed to the development of treatments and saving lives. Studies claim that almost any medical breakthrough in recent years has resulted directly from research using animals. Besides, animals are suitable subjects of investigation because their body structures are quite similar to humans’ in many ways. Therefore, these substitutes of animals reduce the risk of being affected by the product's side effects. Take gorillas as exemplary models for this issue, most vaccines are tested on them before being tested on humans due to the need for completion of medicine.
Conversely/By contrast, from an ethical point of view, experimenting on animals is considered cruel and inhumane. Animals used in research are often force-fed, living in conditions of lack of food and water along with being traumatized to study the healing process. As a result, these animals are particularly vulnerable to be mistreated and abused during the study. There was an article about the first cat to go to space, which showed that this cat returned safely. However, for scientific research purposes, she had to have a hole in her skull. The death of the cat is considered an inhumane death but is not popular in public. In addition, medicine and other products passing all of these animal tests does not signify that it is completely safe. Several studies have shown that unconsidered use can cause birth defects in humans, despite being tested on animals prior to widespread release.
By way of conclusion, notwithstanding the benefits animal testing brings to humans, I strongly suppose that it would be humane to stop abusing animals for any research aims.
