The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1018 and 2011.
The given bar chart illustrates the proportion of accommodations household owners and renters in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. As can be clearly seen from the chart that while the number of households in owned accommodation witnessed a sharp upward trend, the opposite was true for such in rented households.
In the first year surveyed, owners’ accommodations accounted for just over 20 percent, which was nearly a quarter of renters. Then, they slightly went up to about 32 percent and 40 percent in the year 1953 and 1961 respectively. In contrast, the figure for households renting accommodation experienced a downward trend from the highest data in 1918 to nearly third-fifths in 1961.
The year 1971 saw a sharing of data. To be more specific, both series share the same percentage at 50 percent, then the figure for owners rose markedly, exceeding that of renters. In 1981, households in owned accommodation accounted for 60 percent, which was 1.5 times as high as in rented proportion. Having followed this trend, in the last year surveyed, the data for renters’ accommodations drop at around 35%, being 30% lower than that of owners.
