Construction of Artificial Reefs
Both the reading article and lecture discusses about the implications of implementation of artificial reefs (rigid structures that affords survival for diverse fish types) on the ocean sources. While the author suggests that such reefs are highly beneficial discussing about three specific advantages, the speaker challenges the proposition made by author. In his opinion, the problems caused by such structure outweighs their benefits to a great extent. It will be discussed in detail in the following paragraphs.
The author, in the reading, begins with mentioning that the small-scale farmers will be get profited from the particular plan as they are better known about the secret locations where reefs can be constructed. Admittedly, it will help them to thrive against the large-scale competitors; however, the lecturer confutes the position presented by the author. He says that such activity will jeopardize the safety system of the oceans: when such hard structures are not caught on the oceans, then others will be unknown about it resulting in negative consequences such as large-scale farmers net will get tucked and get damaged as well as boat may crash colliding with reefs. Thus, he suggests that they should be made known to public which ultimately work against the favor of small-scaled farmers which completely falsifies the claim made by author.
The writer further asserts that there will be greater increase in the population of fishes with the construction of such reefs. The speaker questions the position made by the author. He points out that the increment in the number of fish is falsely interpreted here. Since, the main purpose of the reefs is to attract the fish, it will just allocated them at one location rather than increasing the number. He further asserts that this described situation results in decrease in the fish population as the farmers will get access to more fishing maintaining imbalance on the fish population.
The reading article, finally, posits that reefs construction will surely assist the proper recycling or reusing process. As opposed to the articles opinion, the lecturer maintains that such structures will not be efficacious. He corroborates his statement by providing an example of artificial reefs constructed in the ocean. When a reef constructed by binding tire materials were used in an ocean, they were separated by the strong force of wind. Consequently, the diverse population of marine ecosystem--including plants and animals--were harmed.
To summarize, the author and speaker holds opposite views on favorability of the application of artificial reefs which will be difficult for both of them on finding common ground.
