Overall, the number of unemployed men was higher than that of women. The rate of joblessness was by far the greatest during October in 2008 and 2009.
More specifically, 10% of men in January in 2008 was unemployed which was about twice as much as that of women in that period. After the proportion of unemployment fell slightly in April and stayed the same until July, both categories of male and female unemployment increased to approximately 16% and 11% respectively.
As for the year of 2009, there was a drop in the number of men to around 12%-13% between January-July whereas the figure of women rose to 14% in October after declining to 7% in April. Furthermore, slightly more than a fifth of men in October did not have a job which was the highest rate over a 2-year period.
