yellowstone fire is good for the environment or not
The article explains about United States' policy in the late 1960s on natural fires to not be supressed and let them burn themselves out. However, after the 1988 Yellowstone fire, which burned for more than two months and damaged a very vast area, many people requested that the "let it burn" policy has to be replaced with a new policy that natural fires should be extinguished as soon as they start. The lecturer contradicts points made in the essay and expresses that the 'let it burn' policy is fundumentally a good approach to natural fire, as it is not only destructive but also, creative.
firstly, despite large destruction of vegetation in Yellowstone fire, it provided the opportunity for a more diverse vegetation coverage in the area afterwards. Plants that needed more open fields and seeds that required great amount of heat started to grow. secondly, different ecosystem provided by the new plants and conditions after the fire, made it possible for various smaller animals to inhabit the place like rabbits and hares. With the presence of such animals their predators also started to appear and therefore, creating an actually richer food chain.
Finally, the lecturer mentions that natural forest fires like in Yellowstone happen in extreme unsual circumstances and are not likely to occur often, as there has not been such a phenomenon since. evidently, the tourists have been coming back and local businesses and tourism may have not been affected.
In conclusion, natural forest fires can be a part of ecological equilibrium in the environment and the 'let it burn' policy might not be bad idea afterall.
