Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support.
It is critically important that universities and colleges pay more attention to sports and social activities as essential elements of the physical and mental health of students. Personally, I believe that as college-old students need these kinds of activities, universities should allocate funds as much as other primary parts of the university. I feel this way for two reasons, which I will explore in the following essay.
To begin with, taking part in activities such as group sports improves young people’s confidence and promotes their abilities like communication with peers which is very important for their future as a member of a bigger community. Moreover, participating in social activities makes young people feel happier and helps students to leave their stress that was driven by projects and exams behind. My personal experience is a compelling illustration of this. For the last three years of university, I have participated in my faculty’s volleyball team. Since then I make deep friendly relationships with my teammates who were my classmate too. Consequently, when I had to present a lecture in front of a group of students I feel more confident because I could find some familiar faces among them. Furthermore, playing volleyball made me relax so after every long and difficult semester my teammate and I arranged a game as a final competition and we had lots of fun.
Although engaging in social activities could be very beneficial, they are usually expensive so if students can’t afford them, they would not be involved with them. In my country, watching movies in a cinema with your friends is the cheapest social activity that you can do but some students can’t afford it because the economy is really bad these days. Therefore, financial support is one of the most important factors in the number of participants in these activities. For instance, when I was a freshman, although I looked for a part-time job very hard, I couldn’t find any. As a result, I did not earn any money to go to cafés or restaurants, or cinemas with my friends. At that time, I wished the university to support me financially but it didn’t, and for about a year I was depressed. even this situation affected my grade until I found a job and I become more socialist.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that universities and colleges should consider social activities as a crucial part of the universities and they should allocate financial support as much as other parts of the academic places.
