At universities and colleges, sports and social activities are just as important as classes and libraries and should receive equal financial support
Some people argue that, the importance of sports and classes is same at universities and libraries and they should get equal financial support. However, I disagree with the prompt. I will give two reasons to proof my stance.
To begin with, classes and library should get more financial supports because research works in some courses are very costly to deal with. Such as, perhaps a biomedical engineering student want to do research on cell culture where thousands dollars of instruments are needed. Without these instruments, a student can not undergo a cell culture research and his potential of becoming a great researcher will be diminished. Research works are very important to get a skilled and advanced nation. Funding this sector is beneficial in the long run for a country.
Secondly, funding on sports and classes should not be same in general universities because there are many specialized institutions to learn sports. If a student is very keen to learn the techniques of swimming, he can admit into a swimming institute where whole funding is spent on that particular sport. If a general educational institute like MIT of Caltech do not spend sufficient amount on funding on its classes, libraries and state-of-the-art researches, it will not flourish. These institutions are well renowned for their world class lectures and libraries. It is only possible because they spend a lot of money on improving their classes and libraries.
In conclusion, there should be an optimum ratio of funding for these two sectors. Rather than 50:50, it should be 65:35 for education and sports. This topic is pretty nuanced, but I think that funding more in classes and library is more important than funding in sports and social activities.
