The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English, in 2000 and 2010.
The pie charts show the percentage of college students from a British university being capable of speaking a second language apart from English in 2000 and 2010.
Overall, Spanish was the most common answer among the survey participants, whereas the rates of students speaking only English were still relatively high.
Looking into the charts, it is noticeable that the proportions of students who responded speaking Spanish only topped the charts in both years surveyed, with 30% in 2000 and 35% in 2010. German was the only group to receive the same percentage in both years, accounting for exactly 10% of the total results. Moreover, French was among the most common responses from students with 15% and 10% accordingly, while the rates of students speaking another language were 15% and 20% respectively. Remarkably, 10% of students confirmed speaking two other languages besides English, with this number being 5% higher in the year 2010. Lastly, one-fifth of the students surveyed responded not being able to speak a second language in 2000, doubling the same figure in 2010 with only 10%.
