Recently, there has been a debate about psychology. More specifically, regarding the passage, the writer puts forth the idea that psychology is a natural science and supports the idea through three remarks. However, in the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out that there are serious flaws in the author’s claim. In fact, the professor thinks it is a social science instead of a natural one, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the text states that psychology is a natural science since it observes the human mind as a function of the brain and affirms that psychological processes can be explored and measured. Nonetheless, the professor disagrees, claiming that psychology explains how influential behavior is affected in a social environment.
Furthermore, the writer feels psychology is based on verified facts and the application of scientific methods, allowing it to be advanced through experiments that lead experts to more data and theories developed. On the other hand, the passage elaborates the idea that psychology is based on phenomenons, meaning it has no subject certainty. To illustrate the point, the lecturer takes into account experiments from exams, which contradict the notes written in the reading.
Lastly, the author brings her/his argument to a close by suggesting that psychology is related to numerous subfields like biological, behavioral, and mental bases. The writer goes on to say that animal experiments, usually on rats, allow scientists to have a better understanding of neural and cellular mechanisms. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by arguing that psychology investigates cognition as the natural base in social applicants.
To sum up, although the lecture and the passage discuss psychology, they both conclude with different views and details. It is evident that they will have trouble finding common ground on this controversial topic and that the three comments disputed by the professor are effectively challenged by the author.
