Anting
It’s still pretty unclear how anting helps birds. None of the theories in the reading are very strong. The reason for the first theory is the timing. Birds engage in anting in the summer. And birds change their feathers in the summer too. And so it seems that one is related to the other. But maybe there is a different reason why birds engage in anting in the summer. You see, ants are outside more in the summer, and it is much easier for the birds to find them in the summer. Maybe the reason we see birds anting in the summer is that birds can find many more ants in the summer than any other time. Birds also changing their feathers in the summer could just be a coincidence.
Second is the theory that acid spray during anting protects the birds from parasites. Well if this was true, then birds that engage in anting must have fewer parasites than birds that don’t engage in anting. But research shows that this is not true. Birds that engage in anting do not seem to have fewer parasites.
Third, it seems doubtful that anting is a way for birds to make ants taste better. You see, birds will engage in anting with other tools too, and sometimes, the things that they put in their feathers are not even food. For example, birds can engage in anting using things like pieces of cigarettes, or pieces of soap, and they don’t eat any of these things later. So, it seems that putting ants on their feathers is not related to eating.
