In the reading, there are three aspects about Spartacus’ story that have made him a hero. However, in the lecture, the lecturer expresses that the stories of Spartacus are not historically accurate.
Firstly, the reading proposes that Spartacus’ original goal in his conflict against Rome is to return home. On the contrary, the lecturer refutes that returning home was not the only goal of Spartacus and his men. They cleared an escaping route by defeating the Roman army, but they didn't take that opportunity but they invaded and wanted to conquer the city of Rome, taking as many valuables from the Romans as they could. He was interested in revenge and wealth, which are less admirable.
Secondly, the reading claims that Spartacus' initial success in fighting against the powerful Roman army has earned him the admiration. Instead, the lecturer rebuts that Spartacus was not necessarily a military genius. That’s because the Romans didn't take Spartacus and his army very seriously at first, by sending only poorly trained and ill equipped army units, which Spartacus just defeated. When the Roman armies sent their best soldiers, Spartacus was quickly defeated, suggesting that Spartacus wasn't a brilliant military leader.
Finally, the reading puts forward that Spartacus sought to liberate all Roman slaves in fighting against Rome and thus commanded respect as an early human rights advocate. However, the lecturer retorts that the last story is not supported by historical evidence either. In eighteenth century in Europe, in anti slavery movement people wanted to have an inspirational hero from ancient times and they thought Spartacus could be that hero. Thus, the playwright wrote a play in which Spartacus fought to liberate all slaves. But it was just an inspirational story in a play, not the historical truth.
