The illustrations demonstrate two diiferent methods through which homes can be saved from being flooded.
From an overall view, the main difference between both techniques is the existence of a stopbank in one of them. While the other method consists of building houses on stilts above ground level.
Starting with the first diagram, which shows the way a stopbank functions in order to prevent a flood from happening. When a river overfloods, the stopbank stands out to be a small hill built next to a 100 year flood level stopping it from bursting its banks. In addition, houses built on stilts can be protected from rainwater as a floodgate under the stopbank can be opened to discharge internal ponding into the river.
However, the next diagram explains another flood protection without the need of stopbanks. This method depends on raising households on stilts of a height of 300mm above the 100 year flood level. This technique is known as " freeboard".
