The line graph illustrates how many gadgets was owned and how long did residents in a nation spend to do the household chores from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, there was an increase in the households using the appliances, and the number of refrigerator used by family surpassed that of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner from 1940 onwards. In contrast, due to the development of technology, people tend to allocate less time for housework than they used to.
The proportion of households with refrigerator started at about only 1% in 1920, after which it rose dramatically to south of 50% in 1940, and then surpassed the percentage of the other 2 sectors with a growth to 100% in 1980 and remained unchanged untill the last year of the period. Similar changes can be seen in the figure for washing machine and vacuum cleaner, which increased subsequently from 30% and 40% in 1920 to 70% in 1960. From 1960 onwards, the percentage of vacuum cleaner continued to rise to 100% in 2019 while refrigerator was followed by a slight fall to nearly 65% in 1980 and a final rise to about 75% in 2019.
The number of hours of housework in 1920 was 50, but this figure fell substantially to 20 hours in 1960. From 1960, the amount of time people spent doing chores declined gradually to only 10 hours in the last year of the period.
