The reading piece and lecture is regarding the long memoir of Chevalier de Seingalt, a controversial figure. The author of the reading states that the memoir is not accurate and claims that many events have been invented or distorted to make his life seem more exciting and glamorous whereas the lecturer states that the memoir is reliable in many ways. The lecturer casts doubts on the main points mentioned in the reading by using three examples.
Preeminently, according to the reading, Chevalier had borrowed considerable amount of money from Swiss merchant and thus could not have been wealthy as he claims. However, the lecturer disputes this points. He affirms that it used to take time to convert assets into money and Chevalier used to borrow money when he ran out of cash.
By the same token, the reading states that the conversation between Chevalier and the famous writer Voltaire, cannot be completely accurate. Congruously, the author suggests that the conversation took place many years ago and it is not possible to capture the conversation accurately. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument. He asserts that Chevalier wrote down the conversation that took place between them each night and used it as a reference while writing the memoir.
In winding up, the reading contends that Chevalier's escape from prison have been possible due to his strong connection with political people. The author totally opposes the claim made by Chevalier that he escaped the prison by making a hole in the ceiling and climbing through the roof. In contrast, the lecturer's stance is that there were more people in the prison who had better connections than Chevalier and still were unable to escape the prison. In addition, the lecturer also points out that there have been official claims that the ceiling of the room where Chevalier was staying had to be repaired after he escaped.
