In an effort to encourage ecologically sustainable forestry practices, an international
organization started issuing certifications to wood companies that meet high ecological
standards by conserving resources and recycling materials. Companies that receive this
certification can attract customers by advertising their products as "ecocertified." Around
the world, many wood companies have adopted new, ecologically friendly practices in
order to receive ecocertification. However, it is unlikely that wood companies in the
United States will do the same, for several reasons.
First, American consumers are exposed to so much advertising that they would not
value or even pay attention to the ecocertification label. Because so many mediocre
products are labeled "new" or "improved," American consumers do not place much trust
in advertising claims in general.
Second, ecocertified wood will be more expensive than uncertified wood because in
order to earn ecocertification, a wood company must pay to have its business examined
by a certification agency. This additional cost gets passed on to consumers. American
consumers tend to be strongly motivated by price, and therefore they are likely to
choose cheaper uncertified wood products. Accordingly, American wood companies will
prefer to keep their prices low rather than obtain ecocertification.
Third, although some people claim that it always makes good business sense for
American companies to keep up with the developments in the rest of the world, this
argument is not convincing. Pursuing certification would make sense for American wood
companies only if they marketed most of their products abroad. But that is not the
case—American wood businesses sell most of their products in the United States,
catering to a very large customer base that is satisfied with the merchandise.
The article and the listening are about a special certificate, which supports ecologically friendly wood industry. The author of the reading section suggests that customers in the United States are not interested in ecocertification for several reasons. In contrast, the lecturer opposes this opinion, and his stand is that citizents of the Unated states welcome this step towards more sustainable forestry.
To begin with, the first point the writer suggests is influencing this topic is that Americans are heavily influenced by advertising, and that they are not trusting eco label. The lecturer, however, believes that the US citizents have full trust in independent agencies, which are providing ecocertification. Furthermore, he states that more and more customers value the enviroment and, therefore, it is a good strategy to obtain such certificate.
The second point discussed in the reading part is that in order to obtain the eco-certification, companies have to allocate additional funds into getting examination done by an appointed agency. Hence, this will increase prizes of products and customers will lose interest in buying them. Again, the speaker thinks that there are flaws in this argument. He claims that in case of comparable goods a customer will be influence by prize just in case of a big cost gab. Moreover, he points out that more and more people are interested in purchasing eco-friendly products.
Lastly, the author mentiones the third reason why this certification has not major impact for American firms. He says that this certificate is more interesting for customers outside the United States, and that the US companies have not interest into expending abroad. On the other hand, The lecturer explains that there is a market opportunity for foreign businesses to come on the US market and fulfil demand for ecologically sustainable wood.
In conclusion, even though the author and the lecturer have profound knowledge in the topic, they dispute the precise details of the issue.
