The author in the reading mentions several benefits of the driverless car in the market; in contrast, the lecturer disagrees and have a different opinion: there are several problems in the author's argument which should be considered because they cast doubts on the mentioned advantages.
First, the author states that the driverless cars are safer because human errors are the major concern for the crashes in the US. The software on which they run is more reliable and hence safer. The lecturer says that there is a problem with this argument by explaining that the software made for this driverless car are itself made by humans; therefore, there is still a chance a human error in this. Moreover, a recent accident has been in a news which was due to a driverless car.
Second, the author claims that these cars can communicate with other car through their software which makes them more efficient on roads by starting and stopping their engine less often; however, the professor refutes this claim: when the human is not driving a car, age will no longer be a criteria to travel through this autonomous car, and as a result more people will be driving the car and pollution will increase no matter how efficient they are.
Finally, the author asserts that these cars can save the time people spend on driving. Once again, the lecturer disagrees. She contends that people find listening to music while driving this car relaxing. If we take away that from them, then they will find one more place to work which they don't want to.
