Advantages of Airships over other aircrafts. Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they
cast doubt on the specific theories presented in the reading passage
The reading passage introduces the topic of airships. Specifically, the writer discusses the advantages of airships over airplanes and helicopters and feels that airships will come back into being widely used. The speaker in the listening passage disagrees. He believes that there are several reasons why airships won’t be widely used again and he attacks each of the claims made in the reading.
To begin with, the author posits an advantage of airships is that for vertical lift, they use a ballon that floats rather than an engine so, airships use less fuel than typical aircraft making their fuel cost more economical. The speaker, on the other hand, refutes this claim by saying that airships use special lighter-than-air gases to project vertically and the two common gases used are hydrogen and helium. He further says that hydrogen catches fire easily and there are tragic records of accidents that occurred in the past and this makes hydrogen unsafe. Also, safer helium gas is expensive and cannot lift airships much higher than hydrogen. So, with these setbacks on the gases, the speaker believes that airships cannot take the place of other aircraft completely.
Another advantage of the airship as claimed by the author is that airships can be used in hard-to-reach locations as they can lift off and land vertically and still be able to carry heavy logs from forests to distribution centers. Again, the speaker believes that there are flaws in the writer’s logic. He holds that for an airship to be able to come down to the ground and lift tree logs it needs to be kept steady and it is difficult to keep airships steady because of their weight and it is often being disturbed by the wind.
Finally, the author brings his argument to a close by saying that airships could be used to replace satellites since they can also rise high above the surface and stay there without refueling for a significant amount of time. Not surprisingly, the speaker takes issue with this claim, and he contends that airships can only rise at a height of about 13km above the surface and there is usually very strong wind at that height and for the spaceship to withstand the wind, it will have to spend a lot of its fuel and by this, it means the airship will be coming down often to refuel and go back up. Therefore, the speaker believes that airships cannot take the place of satellites.
In conclusion, both the writer and the lecturer hold conflicting views about airships and it is clear that they will have a problem finding a common ground on this issue.
