The two tables below depict the profits from the consumption of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in 1999 and 2004 in five countries from Europe.
In the UK, in comparison with the modest profits in 1999: only 1.5 million euros for coffee and 1 million euros for bananas, in 2004, there has been a massive increase in both categories: 20 million and 5.5 million euros can be profited from selling coffee and bananas. Moreover, the sales of coffee in the UK are the highest among the sales of other countries.
In Switzerland, the sales of coffee doubled from 3 million in 1999 to 6 million in 2004. Despite the modest sales of coffee, the profits from bananas remained at the top in 1999 and 2004, surpassing the other European countries’ profits.
In Denmark, Belgium and Sweden, selling coffee didn’t bring much money to these countries. The profits were between 0.8 to 2 for all 3 countries. The sales of bananas in these countries also experienced their modest era, they ranged between 0.6 to 2. However, in 2004, although Belgium saw a fluctuation in banana sales from 0.6 to 4 million euros, both Sweden and Denmark experienced a decrease in sales.
