The chart illustrates the percentage of women having the first child from 1966 to 2006.
Overall, it can be seen that all age brackets experienced an upward trend in the number of women giving birth to their child, except for the people aged under 19, and 19-24. In addition, the 30-34 age group had the highest proportion, whereas the lowest figure shown on the chart was recorded in over 40 age bracket.
Turning to the chart for the detail, in 1966, people aged 19-24 accounted for about 62% of total number of the first-time mother, compared to roughly 34% of those aged under 19. Throughout the next 40 years, these figures dropped significantly, reaching 28% and 12% respectively. In contrast, the 25-to-30-year-olds experienced a slight rise from 35% to 38%, despite a high of 50% in 1986.
In terms of remaining age groups, there were about 12% of women aged 30-34, in comparison with nearly 8% of those aged 34-39. During the following 40 years, the percentage of people falling into the 30-34 and 34-39 age brackets peaked to end the period, at approximately 45% and 30% respectively. Notably, about 3% of women aged over 40 gave birth at the first time. By 2006, this figure climbed to about 5%, despite a slight decrease in 1986.
