The reading and lecture are both about the colonization of asteroid .The author of the reading states that we can obtain multitude of advantage studying asteroid. The lecturer disagrees. He mentions that the study of asteroid does not provide evidence to prove the claimed benefit and attacks each of the claims made in the article.
First, the author begins by stating that study of asteroid confer essential information that are crucial to conduct scientific reasearch such as study of other planet. In addition, as asteroid are small in size with low gravity and not enough atmosphere it will be convenient to do academic research. The professor believes there are flaws in the writer’s position. He contends that we do not even know what and how much resources are available there thus without enough knowledge it will be challenging to conduct any research
Secondly, according to the writing, new industries can obtain essential raw material by mining resources which eventually create job opportunity for many people. Moreover, this restrict the exploitation of resources and conserve earth ambiance.The speaker on other hand points out that although they contain some precious metal and mineral, they are limited in number. Furthermore, we do not know the worth of bringing them back to the earth. Therefore, this seems to be not cost effective.
Finally, the reading passage also notes that these study aid in the survival of human in long run as it act as a refugee in case of devastation caused by war. Moreover, this aids in studying origin of slar system as well as existence of human life. The professor rebuts this argumnet. He puts forth the idea that since there are many small asteroid with not enough mass, human settlement in long run is not possible. They might face problem in muscles and bones hence leads to the uncomfortable life.
As we can see the author and lecturer holds conflicting views on benefit of asteroid study. The speaker effectively challenges the writer’s argument.
