In the 1950s Torreya taxifolia, a type of evergreen tree once very common in the state of Florida, started to die out. No one is sure exactly what caused the decline, but chances are good that if nothing is done, Torreya will soon become extinct. Experts are consider-ing three ways to address the decline of Torreya.
Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt
on the specific solutions presented in the reading passage.
The reading passage and the lecture discuss the topic of Torreya taxifolia, a type of evergreen tree originally from Florida and the problem of its extinction. While the author suggests three possible ways to prevent it from further decline, the speaker contends that each of the suggested solutions is unsound.
According to the first proposal, Torreya trees could be planted in the areas they used to grow, because those areas in Florida have a favorable cool and wet microclimate. However, the lecturer undermines this idea, claiming that this region as any other in the world has been strongly affected by global warming. The climate conditions have become drier and warmer, so it is highly unlikely that the trees will survive after relocation.
The second suggestion, mentioned in the article, is to relocate seeds and saplings of Torreya in another cooler location in the north, in which they have already successfully planted. Nevertheless, the speaker does not agree with it neither, mentioning a Black lokast tree, which spread either and had unpredictable consequences. It killed plenty of other species of the plants, that is why this suggestion could be dangerous for others.
And the third idea is to put seeds and saplings to research centers, where scientists will monitor, protect and make research on this tree. The lecturer also does not support this idea, explaining that there were popular discusses, where concluded that it should be genetic diverge of species. Yet research centers do not provide that, so this method will not work.
