The garph below shows average carbon dioxide emissions per person in the UK, Sweden, Italy, and Portugal between 1967 and 2007.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make the comparisons where relevant.
Representing data in metric terms, the line graph shows the trends in the production of greenhouse gas per capita in four European countries over the period of 40 years from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, both the UK and Sweden took on a course of “green” production, reducing the amount of CO2 pollution. However, despite the downward trend, Great Britain remained the biggest producer of emissions. Also, Italy and Portugal, being far behind at the start, significantly increased their volume by the end of the observed period.
Specifically, the UK was the leader in the production of CO2 fumes in 1967, averaging to 11 metric tonnes, followed by a steady decline to nearly 9 by 2007. Sweden generally reflects this pattern. It came second as a producer of greenhouse gases at about 9 metric tonnes at the beginning, but it recorded a surge in its amount, getting close to that of Britain in 1977 (just above 10 tonnes). From that point on, it fell to under 6 tonnes.
Italy’s and Portugal’s emissions are largely reversed, both showing a stable and considerable rise over the entire period. Portugal generated the least in 1967 (at around 1 tonne), yet its volume had grown fivefold by 2007, becoming equal to that of Sweden. Italy in most respects is quite similar, doubling from the lowest of above 4 tonnes to the highest of nearly 8 and overtaking Sweden in 1987.
