The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030.
The line graph illustrates the amount of energy consumed in America from 1980 to 2008 with predictions made for the next 22 years. Overall, the use of fossil fuels dominates that of renewable energy. It is also noticeable that the consumption of petrol and oil, and coal experiences the highest increase over the given period.
In 1980, the amount of burnt petrol and oil was approximately 35 quadrillion, which almost doubled that of natural gas, at over 20 quadrillion. Slightly less natural gas was burnt at that time, with its figure being just above 15 quadrillion. The consumption of petrol and oil witnessed a significant increase to about 40 quadrillion for the next 28 years, similarly, that of the other fossil fuels both went through a growth of almost 2.5 quadrillion. Petrol and oil consumption is expected to reach a peak at nearly 50 quadrillion, being the most consumed fuel source in 2030. Meanwhile, the figure for used coal and natural gas, though forecasted to experience a rise, will be slightly lower, at about 30 and 23 quadrillion, respectively.
The usage of hydropower and solar/wind stayed static at around 4.5 quadrillion from 1980 to 2008 and is projected to not vary much until 2030. In contrast, that of nuclear power climbed gradually to 6 quadrillion in 2008 and is anticipated to remain flat until the end of the period.
