Writing Task 1
The table illustrates the changes in the totality of factory workforce in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901
In the overall perspective, while the number of factories increased significantly, the total number employees fell dramatically. Moreover, despite initial dominance in terms of number, by the end of the period, there was a minor difference between male and female workers.
In detail, starting at 1851, the number of factories was the lowest at 225 establishments, yet they employed the largest number of worker at 477.100 people, in which there were 287.100 men and 190.000 women. In the next decade in 1861, although there was a tiny increase of 2 factories, the number of employed female workers was bigger than that of male counterparts at 160.000 people and 131.780 people respectively. Fast forward to 1881, when the number of factories nearly tripled to 721 establishment, the total number of employed workers fell to 126.132 people, yet male figure reclaimed their lead in number over the females.
Finally, in the next 20 years, in 1901, accompanied by the notable decrease in the total of factories to 600 establishments, there was a significant drop in number of employees as well as almost half of previous workforce had been relieved off duty and only 61.000 workers remained at work. Moreover the gap in number between male and female employees was 1000 people.
