In many countries nowadays, consumers can go to a supermarket and buy food produced all over the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Nowadays, it appears that the availability of globally grown produce has become more prevalent in different parts of the world. While some view this trend as positive, I would argue that it is predominantly negative due to food safety issues and considerable repercussions for local farmers.
One compelling argument in favor of the increased popularity of food produced globally is it can provide consumers with a broader range of dietary and nutritional choices. In the distant past, there was limited access to food options, resulting in a monotonous diet with only several locally produced foods. However, with the increased access to food products from different corners of the globe, people nowadays can experience significantly more diverse cuisines and flavors from different cultures regardless of seasons. Additionally, it provides a variety of healthy options which allow consumers to select foods that meet their special dietary needs and preferences throughout the year. For example, Vietnamese consumers now can enjoy strawberries at any time as they can buy strawberries imported from different countries, which seemed to be impossible in the past.
Nonetheless, the easy availability of food produced globally poses food safety risks and is detrimental for local farmers. First, as food quality control can be more challenging with global supply chains, food safety issues are a huge concern. Food traveling across borders potentially leads to increased risks of contamination and foodborne illnesses, seriously threatening consumers’ health. Another problem is when consumers prefer imported goods over locally grown products, it would result in a decline in demand for local agricultural produce. Consequently, local farmers can face financial difficulties and struggle to sustain their livelihoods. In Vietnam, many tomato growers have sold their farmland to seek new jobs because they are unable to compete with imported tomatoes from Thailand and China.
In conclusion, despite some benefits related to nutritional and dietary options, the harmful consequences of internationally imported food are more significant. Therefore, I believe this is a negative development overall.
