In recent years, there has been an increase in the amount of time that young people spend on watching television or engaging in online activities, which is believed to have a negative impact on their health. The consequences of excessive screen time on youth health are related to both physical and mental health. This situation can be resolved effectively through collaboration between families and schools.
Excessive screen time fosters several related health issues to young people. Firstly, extended use of digital devices can lead to poor posture, creating bones and joint problems including back pain and degenerative spine. Besides, such a sedentary lifestyle, if it lasts for a long time, significantly contributes to other long-term chronic complex conditions such as diabetes and obesity. What is more, the blue light emitted by screens can stimulate the brain and interfere with sleep patterns, leading to difficulties falling asleep and sleep deprivation in the long run. These factors will seriously affect every aspect of young people’s well-being and studying.
Parents and educators play a key role in addressing this situation. For parents, they should strictly set screen time limits for their children. At the same time, increasing family bonding time is also essential. Instead of watching television after dinners, parents can get involved in healthier activities with their children such as reading or playing sports. For educators, it is necessary for them to organise more engaging and useful extra-curricular activities and clubs for students. Most students emerge themselves in online games or binge-watching short videos on social media due to the lack of alternative healthy entertainment. Therefore, if they have more options to choose from, I believe they should reduce their time spent on those digital devices.
In conclusion, young people spending too much time on television or internet-based activities can suffer from various health conditions, but this can be eliminated through more interesting activities and parental control.
