The main idea of both the passage and the talk is that whether human presence at Venus is possible or not. Considering this, the author offers three issues to indicate that maintaining a human presence at Venus is impossible. The professor, on the other hand, not only refutes the author's assessments, but also asserts that the announced option runs counter to the ways the reading just discussed. The lecturer demonstrates three reasons to reject the points in the passage.
The first criticism of the passage against which the lecture argues is that due to atmospheric pressure at Venus's surface, anything crush. As stated by the professor, establishing a station floating on the Venus's atmosphere rather than being at the planet's surface can solve this problem. It is proven that the more we go away from the surface, the more pressure decreases. So, it will not be dangerous for people to be on the station, which is 50 kilometer away from the planet's surface.
Moreover, unlike the reading which claims that owing to the fact that there is no water reservoir and oxygen at Venus, we are required to fulfill the demand of people from the Earth, which is not possible, the professor illustrates that there are a great amount of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid at Venus's atmosphere, and there is a chemical process by which we can make oxygen and water from carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid. Therefore, humans at Venus can easily obtain water and oxygen, and there is no need to import them from Earth.
Finally, the lecture contradicts the fallacy of the reading that humans cannot have electricity to power their machines and equipment, thanks to lack of light at the planet, saying that it is true that a little amount of light reaches to the surface of the planet; however, the clouds which are 50 kilometers away from the Venus's surface are not thick, and the aforementioned station can use from both the light reflected from the clouds and the sunlight hitting atmosphere. Hence, people can produce more than enough electricity to power their machines and equipment.
All in all, the professor maintains that even though presenting humans at the Venus is challenging, the arguments mentioned in the passage are not convincing.
