The reading and the lecture are both about decreasing the number of sea otters along the western coast, which is two possible explanation. The author of the reading believes that environmental pollution is the most effective factor. The lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She thinks pollution hypothesis is less likley than attacks by predators.
First of all, the author claims that in the western coast there were a lot of source for contamination such as oil rigs many industrial chemical pollution. He believs this pollution could affect the otters and suceptable them to diseases. This point is challenged by the lecture. She says that if the otters died by pollution, why there is not any dead body of them. Furthermore, she points out attacks by predators is more possible. Because in this condition, there is not any dead body.
Secondly, the author states that if predator is more likely, why other species were decreased too? This argument is rebutted by the lecture. She suggests that the number of wales is declined because human hunted them.
Finally, the author mentions that uneven pattarn of decline of otters. He is of the opinion that environmental factors cause this uneven pattern. The lecture, on the other hand, feels that this pattern created because there were different access for predators in different places. Also shallow or rocky water is not suitable for wales to hunt otters.
