The reading claims
The reading claims that using and growing genetically modified trees on large scale will bring a number of advantages. However, the lecturer finds all the ideas dubious and presents some evidence to refute them all.
First, the reading argues that genetically modified trees are more resistance than their natural counterparts. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that although modified trees are more resistance against an especial weather condition or pest, the natural trees have more genetic diversity. It means that in the pool of natural trees and for every situation possible, you will have some few trees that are resistant to that situation. Hence, if there is a new situation, you can be sure that some trees will survive, but you cannot say the same things for genetically modified trees. They are uniformly designed, and all of them have the same properties. Because of this, when they are faced with some new challenge, something like new pests or new climate change, all of them will wipe out.
Furthermore, the text holds the view that genetically modified trees can have great economic benefits for farmers. On the contrary, the professor underlines the fact that they are have some hidden costs that make them more expensive. The companies which design the seeds of genetically modified trees, charge more money for them. Moreover, the farmer must pay money to the companies, for each time that he uses the seeds of these trees.
Finally, the reading asserts that these trees can be an aid in preserving will trees. In contrast, the speaker dismisses this issue due to the fact that genetically modified trees can bring more damages to wild trees. These trees grow more aggressively than wild trees, and they are planted among the wild trees. Hence, they will compete with each other for natural resources, things like sun light or water. The genetically modified trees will win in this race and will crowd out the wild trees.
