The reading passage contends that there are three theories about how agnostids behaved. On the other hand, the lecturer brings about several points that contradict this argument.
First of all, the lecturer questions the theory in the reading passage that the agnostids may have hunted smaller animals as free-swimming predators. This is because most arthropods have well-developed eyes to prey on. Most powerful ability to detect prey is vision. However, the agnostids were blind when detecting prey. Even though there is no evidence of this function, they might have another special sensory, except eyes. Thus, the reading passage‘s first theory is invalid.
Moreover, the lecturer casts doubt on the theory in the reading passage that the agnostids might be dweller on the sea floor. This is because it is true most of arthropods are unable to move fast and far in a long distance. And also they move slowly within the small geographic area. However, the agnostids were able to move fast and far in a large distance. It is unusual compared with other anthropods. Consequently, the reading passage’s second theory is refuted.
Last but not least, another possibility of the agnostids is parasites, having lived on primitive fish or even on other, large arthropods. It is obvious that it is true that many species of arthropods live as parasites. However, a myriad of the species exist in the world. Even agnostids seems to be primitive arthropods, there is exception for the arthropods’ ancestors and no evidence of this theory based on their fossil remains. As a result, the reading passage’s last theory is contradicted
