In this set of material, the reading passage states that a European silver coin discovered at a Native American archaeological site. People believed that this coin had been bought to North America by European explorers were called Norse, however the reading contends that some archaeologists believe that this story is fake by a person who wanted to mislead the public; hence it brings three reasons for this claim and support them, however the lecture finds all reasons dubious and provides some evidence to advocate that this occurrence is real. The information the professor provides contradicts the facts outlined in the reading.
First, the reading claims that Maine where the coin was discovered in it, had a great distance from the sites documenting as Norse in eastern Canada, so it is impossible that the explorers could have arrived there, on the contrary the professor argues that except silver coin, there were a lot of other objects that in the site, consequently it can be concluded that Norse settlements in Canada were trading with North America in this far distance.
Second, the author of reading declares that any other coins did not find in Canadian sites, as a result they could have not brought these coins to their North American settlements, in contrast the lecture contends that since these settlements had not been permanent and then they may have returned to the Europe, it is possible that these coins had not been worthwhile for people any more.
Third, the reading proposes that these Norse explorers would have known that these silver coins were not being used in America as money, consequently bringing them would have been a waste thing, conversely the professor disagrees and believes that it is true the American people were not using silver coins, however silver coins had an appealing appearance and they could attract people.
