The reading and lecture about a method which is called salvage logging. In the mentioned approach, after a forest fires, dead trees must be removed from forest. The reading provides three reasons that salvage logging is beneficial in several aspects and then supports them. The lecturer casts doubt on the claims made in the article and finds all of arguments dubious. Meanwhile she believes that salvage logging would have serious, long term damage on the forest's future.
First of all, the author of reading declares that dead trees last to decompose for several years if laborers do not remove them, then new trees will not have any chance for the growth. Needless to say through salvage logging -cleaning dead trees-, the new spaces and rooms will be appeared and other species would take advantage of this condition. This point is challenged by the professor. She points out that decomposing trees is a vital process for soil. When a tree starts decomposing, as a matter a fact, it will act as natural process which is advantageous for soil because it can provide soil's needed nutrition.
Secondly, the article contends that after a fire in forest, insects which are harmful will be able to be settled in dead trees and during time, they would show negative impacts on other healthy trees; conversely, the lecturer claims that there is a special beetle which is lives on spruce tree for hundred years without any damage report. Furthermore, there are plentiful of innocent insects or birds which rely on dead trees as nesting; hence, slave logging may harm them also.
Finally, the reading passage states that aforementioned way would assist governments to improve their economy. For instance, dead trees are still one of the best resources for wood companies and their products. Moreover, salvage logging requires a lot of workers; therefore, the communities will reduce the rate of unemployment. This argument is rebutted by the lecturer and she poses that statistical averages have shown that obtained profit through salvage logging is very small. Besides, the governments have to use helicopters or other expensive facilities for removing dead trees. One should not forget that workers will have a temporary job and also the government has to spend much money for their training.
