In this set of material, the reading passage provide three theories that would account for the sea cow's extinction. However, in the eyes of the lecture, the real reasons of the extinction are still not clear and none of these theories are acceptable.
The author believes that, overhunting sea cows by native Siberian people for hundred of years could have been the main cause of extinction. On the contrary, the speaker argues that sea cows were massive creatures and the native people did not need to hunt a large group of them, because the population of Siberian was not large.
In addition, the reading passage declare sea cows may have become extinct because of ecosystem disturbances, which caused a decrease of the Kelp that these creatures was depend on. However, the professor refute this theory, because if there were severe ecosystem disturbances, other marine species, such as whales, would be affected. Since, there is no broader ecosystem problem, the kelp was growing just fine and as a result, the sea cows did not experience food shortage.
Furthermore, the writer expresses the sea cows became extinct, because many European fur traders hunted these animals. By contrast, based on listening part, European were not the main cause of the sea cow's extinction, because the population of these animals was quite small when the fur traders came. Evidence has shown that the number of sea cows was at its largest several centuries before the 1700s. Therefore, there must have been another reason that caused a serious decline in sea cow population before the European's arrival.
