The reading and the lecture are both about the building in the settlement of Chaco Canyon, in New Mexico. The author provides three possible theories about the purpose of these houses. However, the lecturer says that all these theories are not convincing.
First, the article says that the building could have been used for housing. The speaker, on the other hand, rebuts this claim. He elaborates on this by explaining that the building form inside does not contain any evidence that is had been used as a residence place. For instance, it has only ten fireplaces, while it consists of 100 rooms. It should have many more of them if people had lived there.
Second, the text contends that the building was used as a storage place for the grain maze. Conversely, the professor rejects this supposition and he asserts that there no traces of maze have been found. Or even big container that supposedly used to store maze in them.
Third, the passage suggests that the massive building were used as ceremonial centers. In contrast, the lecturer refutes this assumption. He asserts that pottery is not a proof, simply because other material have been found like construction materials, stones and sands. It is possible that these potteries were just discarded there by some workers. These materials do not have any relation with ceremonies. Thus, it is unlikely that the place used for ceremonies.
