TPO 8 - Integrated: Chevalier's memoir
In the reading, the author claims that Chevalier's memoir, which was written regarding his adventures throughout his lifetime, is not precision by pointing out 3 reasons of support. However, finding all the ideas implausible and questionable, the lecturer casts doubt on what is presented in the text and states some evidences to the contrary.
At first, the author argues that the loan of the Swiss merchant undermined his assertion concerning his wealth. Conversely, the professor brings up the idea that this debt had nothing to do with his fortune. Indeed, spending considerable amount of money for parties and gambling, Chevalier needed cash, but he had to sell his properties at the first place. Therefore, as it took some day till he received the money, he had no other choice but borrowing in order to pay the expenses.
In addition, the reading passage holds the view that Chevalier conversation with Voltaire could not have been preciseness since the talk had been occurred several years ago. On the other hand, the lecturer disputes this point by clarifying the fact that Chevalier wrote the details of the conversations every single night. Consequently, it is possible that he kept his notes for all those years. Furthermore, witnesses of his death verified that he possessed the consolidated notes which probably utilized them for preparing the memoire.
Finally, the author asserts Chevalier was able to break out the prison in Venice due to his political connection across the country not his nobility to use metal means to make a hole. The lecturer, though, dismisses it by subscribing to the view point that there were some other individuals with strong political relationships, but they could not run away nonetheless. Moreover, the valid documented attributing ti the old Vanish government revealed that the cell of Chevalier repaired forthwith after his escape. Undoubtedly, if he did not escape, the wall would not require any additional fixation.
